NEW WAYS OF COMMEMORATION AND REMEMBRANCE CULTURE
In the project “Conceptualization of an internet-based documentation platform as a virtual memorial site”, the design and structure of a target group-oriented website was developed.
The aim of the website is to create an attractive online presentation for memorial sites of modern and contemporary history. Using the Kaufering VII subcamp near Landsberg as an example, the feasibility, visualizations and state of the art were researched.
BACKGROUND
Southeast of the town of Landsberg lies the Kaufering VII concentration camp, one of ten other camps that were set up in 1944 as a satellite camp complex of Dachau for the construction of three semi-underground bunkers.
The buildings and ruins of the Kaufering VII concentration camp, which have been preserved to this day, are considered architectural and ground monuments of national importance. They are the only remaining original concentration camp buildings in the Federal Republic of Germany.
Part of the former Kaufering VII concentration camp now forms the European Holocaust Memorial. The main task of the European Holocaust Memorial Foundation is to preserve the memorial site as a witness to National Socialist crimes and as a place of remembrance of the suffering of the victims.
In this way, the foundation tries to keep the knowledge of historical events alive in people’s minds and pass it on.
On the initiative of Wolfgang Hauck, the project “Conceptualization of an internet-based documentation platform as a virtual memorial and place of remembrance” was investigated and developed together with the cultural association “dieKunstBauStelle”.
