THE PROJECT
Innovative, integrative, interactive: the cultural association “dieKunstBauStelle” is implementing a media and history project. The basis is a digital and location-based smartphone app for multimedia access to regional history. A platform on which historians, artists, authors, journalists and journalists work together with young people, contemporary witnesses and municipal partners to create access to the history of the Landsberg am Lech district. An opportunity for digital participation in our cultural and historical heritage. The best thing about it: everything is free of charge and accessible to users at any time. This starts under the working title “LandsbergHistoryApp”.
Since 2020, the pilot project has been realized thematically and conceptually in cooperation with the association BerlinHistory e. V., idea provider and software developer. To this end, an interdisciplinary editorial group was formed as a team through training and workshops.
Existing exhibitions are jointly revised and new media content is produced. This includes audio tours, 360° tours and virtual reality rooms. The region’s online offerings can also be bundled under artistic, historical and media aspects at a central location and benefit directly from the navigation app function.
History workshop with a model character
Since May 1, 2023, all population groups can benefit from the project, but especially visitors in the Landsberger am Lech district, which is the first to start with eight municipalities in the app. It is also intended to create an additional offer for extracurricular youth education projects, says Hauck. In consultation with the teachers, teaching content could be specifically addressed, resulting in valuable synergy effects. Training courses are intended to encourage and enable interested citizens to contribute content and contributions in the form of a “participatory history workshop”.
The “BayernHistoryApp project” has a model character. More than 50 high-ranking partners, memorial sites, museums and archives of the BerlinHistoryApp are already part of the app. Over eight years of development work, much of it on a voluntary basis. This sustainability is paying off. The app is now “the” app for Berlin. This open format will now be used to its full extent for the first time. The scope of topics will therefore be unique in Germany.
A “Who’s Who” of the history of the district of Landsberg am Lech
“In the first phase by November 2021, the first biographical text and image entries will be incorporated into the app,” says Hauck. This will represent a “who’s who” of history in the district of Landsberg am Lech. This includes people from the last few centuries with their local references, as well as places from early history such as the settlement of Pestenacker.
There is already great interest in including architectural and natural monuments. The history of the raftsmen and the salt trade are also planned. In this way, a medieval town will be portrayed in a contemporary way. The municipalities of Greifenberg and Dießen are the first to get started. The landmarks can already be discovered there since May 1, 2023.
But it is not just about a history that is up to 1,000 years old. There is now also a specialist committee to combine the incorporation of more recent history with existing information provided by the district of Landsberg am Lech, the municipalities of Dießen, Geltendorf, Kaufering, Fuchstal, Schondorf, Prittriching and Egling a. d. Paar and other initiatives.
According to Berlin historian and cultural manager Martin Recken, who has been developing the Berlin History project for eight years – and recently won an award for the best museum app with his team – the district of Landsberg is predestined for the project as a historical learning location. “The Regeion could become one of our most interesting partners.” The region’s history is incredibly exciting. I see many synergies and great potential for our collaboration.
Try it out!
The BerlinHistoryApp (the model) can be installed and tried out free of charge on Android and iOS smartphones.
You can navigate to the location on the interactive map and start exploring Berlin with the app:

An award-winning platform: BerlinHistory app
The BerlinHistory app is a digital museum of Berlin history that is constantly being expanded by the non-profit association of the same name in collaboration with Berlin cultural institutions, initiatives and archives. All content is displayed in a location-based manner in the city and is created for permanent storage. The BerlinHistory app provides a wide range of information about the city’s history on current and historical maps and aerial photographs with texts, photos, films, interviews with contemporary witnesses and tours. The core team consists of historians and software developers who continuously develop new technical features and at the same time guarantee sustainable operation (updates, server infrastructure, support, etc.).
The BerlinHistory app is now the most used and best-rated of its kind in the app stores and has been online since February 21, 2019. Since then, it has been growing daily through its own productions, as well as through the contributions and thematic layers of its more than 80 cooperation partners (museums, memorials, archives and history initiatives).
The BerlinHistory app is free, ad-free and, at around 40 MB, takes up minimal storage space as all content is streamed. With the innovative camera tool and the associated school project, BerlinHistory is taking the first step towards a participatory platform for urban history.
