BACKGROUND

With the support and on the initiative of the FILMFORUM at the Stadttheater Landsberg, Kurt Tykwer, the association dieKunstBauStelle e.V. started a documentary film project with a special local and artistic reference in 2019.

This Landsberg project is also a presentation of decades of cultural work in Landsberg. It will not only be significant in terms of content, but also for Landsberg’s image. The media coverage of this project by BR television, the media and the press in 2019 also reflected this significance.

THEATER ON THE WAITZINGER MEADOW

From August 3 to 11, 2019, performances of his magnificent and timely play DER AUFHATLSAME AUFSTIEG DES ARTURO UI, were shown in the circus tent on the Waitzinger Wiese to mark the Brecht Year.

CREATION OF THE PLAY

The production was created by THEATER WASSERBURG, with production and overall management by Theater DIE STELZER from Landsberg am Lech. Theater DIE ST ELZER also made this possible as the highlight of the 25th anniversary in Landsberg.

The uniqueness of the cooperation between the different genres as well as the artistic level that emerged was an occasion to portray this project for the first time in a documentary film.

CONTENT OF THE PIECE

Arturo Ui wants to get to the top. No matter what the cost. Bribery, corruption, murder, fraud, whatever the means. The main thing is to get to the top: by exploiting an economic crisis, using oratory and agitation, Arturo Ui manages a frighteningly easy political ascent.

In times of crisis, morality is in short supply and so a nobody becomes the head of an empire with blatant audacity.

For Brecht, the circus is also a place of mass suggestion, a type of public relations work in which elements of enchantment, illusion and theatricality are indispensable.

    The production was by Uwe Bertram, who has directed Theater Wasserburg since 2003, worked at the Volkstheater Rostock and was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2015.
  • DIE STELZER
    Die Stelzer is a privately run professional theater that has been active in Landsberg since 1983 and 1994 with various formats, from festival plays and youth theater to professional, international theater. The Landsberg theater is now internationally active and is present worldwide as a cultural ambassador for Landsberg. The production and the training of actors for theater on stilts is an essential core in this production of ARTURO UI.

FILMMAKER ROBERT FISCHER

The renowned filmmaker Robert Fischer was recruited for the realization. He has already made the Hubert von Herkomer documentary (awarded the Ellinor Holland Art Prize in 2014).

USE AS A FILM AT AND WITH SCHOOLS IN THE DISTRICT OF LANDSBERG AM LECH

In cooperation with the schools in the district, the film is to be specifically integrated into lessons (German, history, art). It serves as a crystallization point for the various subjects and topics. Accompanying materials are to be produced for the lessons and serve as a basis for the teachers. The presentation/premiere is to take place at the filnfest Munich in July 2022.
