NEW WAYS OF REMEMBRANCE CULTURE
Almost everyone in Landsberg will know the Black Panther in the Inselbad. The heavy bronze sculpture stands by the main pool and serves as a practical storage place for towels and swimsuits. But how did such a work of art end up in a municipal outdoor pool? How old is it and why is it there? The young people of Landsberg will be addressing these questions in the near future in a new project by the “dieKunstBauStelle” association.
“These objects are often just there. They are so common that people don’t normally pay attention to historical contexts,” says Wolfgang Hauck, the initiator of the project. That’s why the new project group wants to raise awareness by taking a closer look at what is already taken for granted. A prerequisite for this is knowledge of local history. The pupils and young people are accompanied by journalist Karla Schönebeck, among others, who is preparing historical research.

Continuation 2021
Five years have passed since the start in 2016. With the second project phase in 2021, the aim is now to provide appropriate support for Fritz Behn, his work and the history of the panther. As early as the 2016 panel discussion, it became clear that contextualizing and commenting on the work in public space is essential.
Yet the town of Landsberg has done nothing to handle this heritage carefully and responsibly. The renovation and refurbishment of the Inselbad is planned for 2022. This is an opportunity to make up for what has been neglected.
A project dedicated to this topic will follow in 2021 and will initiate and accompany a public discourse.
The context-related and historical-critical reappraisal will use the example of the Panther to focus on the topics of toleration, omission and unreflected presence of National Socialist legacy and after-effects in this public discourse.
